The temporary trading license is over.
More than a year ago, the Trump administration put a stop to US companies that wanted to trade with Huawei, because they believe the company poses a security risk. To make the transition a little easier, however, certain time-limited reliefs were given.
The time-limited trade license was granted to give US telecom operators with Huawei equipment in their networks, as well as consumers with Huawei equipment, time to replace it with devices from «approved» suppliers.
Now the Washington Post reports that the exceptions have expired. It happened on August 13th.
This opens up potential new problems for Huawei, and for customers of the company.
Google: can no longer post updates
Among other things, Huawei has in the past year been able to use American software such as Windows for its laptops. They have also provided their mobile customers with updates to already launched phones with the US Android operating system. Major US hardware manufacturers such as AMD, Qualcomm, Nvidia and Intel have also had a temporary permit to supply computer chips to the Chinese company.
Many people are wondering what will happen now that the Americans are again cutting off the supply of components and banning cooperation and exchange of technology with the Chinese company.
Google reports to the Washington Post that they will no longer be able to send out Android updates to Huawei phones.
Google has not been allowed to deliver Android to new phone models from Huawei since May 2019, but to circumvent this, Huawei has used an open source version of the operating system, without built-in Google apps such as the Play Store or Gmail.
Huawei has for a long time been trying to build its own app store and its own ecosystem. That investment has gained momentum after the «Google stop» last year, but there is still a lack of important apps in the store.
Sales of Huawei phones have dropped dramatically in Europe recently, but increased in China – and the manufacturer recently climbed to the top of the podium as the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer despite measures from the United States.
For example, Huawei will make sure that phones receive the necessary security and system updates through the open source version of Android that most of their phones run with.
Huawei also states that phones that came with the Google Play Store installed will continue to work just as before, but informs that anyone who has phones without the Google App Store must use the browser to use Google services such as YouTube or Google Maps.
Quiet about new Windows laptops
When it comes to the company’s Windows-based PCs in the MateBook series, customers are promised updates that they are used to, both by Windows and other Huawei software.
In its statement, however, Huawei does not mention anything about what will happen to future models with new hardware. It may be difficult for Huawei to purchase volume licenses for Windows directly from Microsoft, but the company may be able to find other players to trade through.
However, it is somewhat uncertain whether we will see updated versions of machines such as the MateBook D14, MateBook X and MateBook X Pro right away.
